Why Hormone Balance Is A Journey

By

Every part of your body is interconnected. And your hormones are the key to bringing all your body systems together in a perfect symphony.

Your sex hormones play a huge role in how you feel on a daily basis, both physically and emotionally; making hormones the answer to your weight, energy, mood and so much more.

And when our hormones are balanced, we feel great, we have energy and can do the things we love.

“Hormones are the key to bringing all your body systems together in a perfect symphony.”

Why hormone balance is a long term strategy

With hormones - and so many other parts of your body - it’s all about balance. For our hormones to balance, our other body systems must also be balanced.

And because there are so many other body systems, this makes hormone balance a long term strategy, rather than a short term game.

Anything from nutrients, gut health, adrenal function to mood, sleep and stress has a role to play in normal hormone balance.

"Hormone balance is not a short term game, it’s a long term strategy.”

3 key reasons hormones become unbalanced:

1. Stress

The main reason sex hormones become unbalanced is because our clever bodies prioritise hormones for what we need, to survive right now. And in the modern world, we experience stress more frequently than our ancestors, our bodies are producing more hormones to ‘survive’ this stress.

This means our body’s natural, evolutionary response to stress might actually be at the root of hormonal imbalance.

Let’s take a closer look at this:

When we experience stress, our bodies prioritise producing stress hormones over sex hormones, essentially prioritising survival over reproduction. This is known as the ‘flight or fight’ response.

Our sex hormones and stress hormones share the same precursors. So for your body to produce enough stress hormones, it will be harder make enough of your calming sex hormone, progesterone. This is known as the pregnenolone steal, where we end up with low progesterone levels and high oestrogen levels in comparison

2. Unstable Blood Sugar Levels

When your blood sugar levels are out of balance it means your body is using sugars and proteins as a fuel source, rather than fats. This gives your body quick, emergency energy. The body actually interprets high blood sugar levels as a stressor which also stimulates the release of cortisol, prioritising surviving over reproduction. The short of it is, if you can’t stabilise your blood sugar levels over a day, you won’t have any chance of stabilising your hormones over a month.

“If you can’t stabilise your blood sugar levels over a day, you won’t have any chance of stabilising your hormones over a month.”

3. Environmental Toxins

In the modern world, another key reason for hormone imbalance is because of exposure to environmental toxins. Environment toxins can contain oestrogen-mimicking molecules, which are known as xenoestrogens. When we are exposed to xenoestrogens, this essentially creates an excess of oestrogen in relation to progesterone.

So where to start?

1. Start with the basics

Doing the basics really well is absolutely key. This includes eating the right for you and making sure you’re getting your baseline level of nutrients daily. To find out what your food type is, take our BePure Macronutrient Profile Test.

2. Test your hormones

Now you can test your hormone balance with the Eve Hormone Balance Test to measure normal hormone balance and function. Eve is our sister brand that specialises in simple, at-home collection hormone testing.

For women, this test measures hormone pathways for DHEAs, progesterone, oestrogen and testosterone. For men, this test focuses on the levels of DHEA, oestrogen and testosterone.

These specific hormones are tested to determine the levels of each, as well as their relationship to one another, as an indication of normal levels and function.

You also get access to a set of personalised diet, lifestyle and nutritional support recommendations that come with an easy-to-understand test report.
